Butterflies Symbolism of Transformation
Butterflies aren’t something I usually draw. They feel too clean for my style—too perfect, maybe. I don’t connect to them in the usual way. But sometimes people come in with butterfly ideas, and I try to approach them differently—not so symmetrical or delicate, but more raw. A little off. A little chaotic.
It makes sense why so many people are drawn to them. They carry a lot of weight, symbolically. They’re about change. About becoming. The transformation from caterpillar to butterfly is powerful—marking growth, healing, or a new chapter. Some people choose them after loss, others after finding freedom.
They also speak to independence—something small that moves freely, lightly, without asking for permission. That’s something a lot of us want to carry. And even if I don’t lean into their softness, I get the pull. The beauty, the elegance, the grace. The way a shape can say something without needing words. I've done a few butterfly tattoos. Never the standard version. Always a little twisted, a little off-balance—but still honest. Still carrying meaning. Maybe that's the version I understand.
